Kids Eat Free! Kid Friendly Options at Papa Lopez

Kids Eat Free! Kid Friendly Options at Papa Lopez

Are you tired of having to constantly cater to the picky eaters in your family, and looking for ways for your kids to broaden their culinary horizons? Then you are not alone. One of the most frustrating things about parenting is dealing with a child who has decided that their entire diet should be based on only foods that are white. Or crunchy. Or shaped like a dinosaur. Getting a picky eater to try something new may seem like a monumental struggle in the making, but it doesn't have to be. The team at Papa Lopez Mexican Cantina would like to share the following tips for parents who want to introduce their children to new favorite foods.

Get the Kids on Board

The best place to begin is, well, the beginning. Far too many parents try to "trick" their kids into eating new foods. They carefully blend new ingredients into a child's favorite dish or try to camouflage new items to look like something the child is already familiar with. Not only does that rarely work, but it also causes a lack of trust between parent and child, which is never a good thing. A better approach is to sit down with your child and talk about the importance of eating a varied diet, and how fun it can be to try new things and perhaps find new favorites. Emphasize that the child is only expected to try new dishes, not to clean their plate every time something new is presented. At Papa Lopez Mexican Cantina, we offer a number of kid-friendly favorites like tacos and quesadillas, as well as plenty of dishes that can provide a taste of something new. An excellent way to introduce kids to a new ingredient or sauce is by having them take a few bites from your own meal and integrating those ingredients into your child's meal. Before you know it, they will be ordering dishes that you would never have guessed!

One of the most powerful ways to teach children how to appreciate different food types is to have them grow some things in their own back yard. If that approach is not possible, take the kids to the grocery store and have them participate in weekly food shopping.

Involve Kids in Food Shopping, Preparation and Even Growing

One of the most powerful ways to teach children how to appreciate different food types is to have them grow some things in their own back yard. If that approach is not possible, take the kids to the grocery store and have them participate in weekly food shopping. Teach them how to choose a ripe melon, which tomatoes are likely to taste best and how to tell if a pineapple is ripe enough to eat. Continue by bringing them into the kitchen to help, even if it is only to wash fruit, stir up a salad or arrange a plate of vegetables. Kids like to be involved, and this is a great way to take some of the intimidation out of trying new foods.

At Papa Lopez Mexican Cantina, we pride ourselves on providing excellent menu items for all of our guests, even the smallest visitors. We encourage you to bring the kids in and have them try something new. To that end, we offer Kids Eat Free specials on Mondays and Tuesdays, where children can choose a free item from the kid's menu with the purchase of an adult entree. We look forward to meeting you and your family, and we hope that your children find their new favorite dish among our options.
